Daniel Jay “Danny” Gokey is an American singer and former church music director. Born on April 24, 1980, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Gokey gained national recognition as the third-place finalist on the eighth season of American Idol in 2009. Prior to his rise to fame on the show, he served as a worship leader at his church. His personal story, including the tragic loss of his first wife, Sophia Martinez (m. 2004), to complications from congenital heart disease in 2008, deeply influenced his early career and inspired him to establish “Sophia’s Heart,” a foundation aimed at supporting children and families. Danny Gokey later married Leyicet Peralta in 2012, and they have four children.
Gokey’s musical journey initially saw him pivot to country music after American Idol, releasing his debut album My Best Days in 2010. However, he transitioned to Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) and Pop genres, where he has achieved significant success, becoming one of the most celebrated artists in the Christian music industry.
