Why Oyedepo And Oyakhilome Are Not Close Even Though They Were Both Mentored By Idahosa

One of the most impactful ministers of God in history to have ever come from Nigeria was the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa, the founder of the Church of God Missions International. Archbishop Idahosa was believed to have been mightily used by God to erect the foundations of the Pentecostal movement in Nigeria.

Idahosa, who was also one of the founding fathers and one-time president of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), had several spiritual sons during the ’80s and ’90s before his death in 1998. Two of them, in particular, were: Bishop David Oyedepo, the President and founder of the Living Faith Church (LFC), and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the Senior Pastor of Believers’ Love World (BLW) aka Christ Embassy.

According to Ivory, Oyedepo met Idahosa on 5th February 1986, at the age of 32. At the time, Idahosa was already an established minister, whose influence had grown in leaps and bounds. It was from that point that Idahosa’s mentorship over the young Oyedepo started.

On the other hand, Oyakhilome met with Idahosa as a young man who was finding his bearing in ministry. At some point, he was a member of CGMI and worked as a bookstore keeper with the ministry.

Today, both Oyedepo and Oyakhilome are two of the most popular ministers in Nigeria, however, there is barely a tracks record of their friendship or closeness. Why are both ministers not close? The reason why Oyedepo and Oyakhilome are not close is because of doctrinal differences.

One common point in their sermons is that both ministers believe and teach Faith and Prosperity gospel, however, their patterns of ministry and beliefs are different.

Oyedepo has made it clear several times that God didn’t call him to debate doctrine, so he does not meddle with doctrinal exegesis but believes strongly in having a convenant with God and therefore preaches convenant sermons.

Whereas, Oyakhilome is known to preach sermons whose roots are hinged on Grace, to the amusement of many young ministers, who consider him their mentor. He believes that believers are as a result of God’s convenant with Abraham so therefore needs not be in another convenant with God.
