Peter Nwachukwu, Husband of Late Gospel Star Osinachi, Sentenced to Death by Hanging
Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been handed a death sentence by hanging after being found guilty of culpable homicide. The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, delivered the verdict on Monday, dismissing Nwachukwu’s no-case submission.
The court ruled that Nwachukwu was responsible for the tragic death of his wife, Osinachi, on April 8, 2022. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme presided over the case, determining that his actions led directly to the singer’s demise.
Nwachukwu, who was formally charged on June 3, 2022, faced a total of 23 criminal counts, including culpable homicide, domestic violence, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation. The case drew widespread attention due to the severity of the allegations, which came to light after the untimely death of the 42-year-old gospel singer.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children, and submitted 25 exhibits as evidence. Nwachukwu, in his defense, called four witnesses and introduced four exhibits.
Despite his lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleading for leniency on his behalf, the court did not show mercy. Nwachukwu was sentenced to death by hanging for the first count of culpable homicide. In addition, he received sentences ranging from six months to three years for the other charges and was fined a total of N700,000.
The prosecution was represented by Mrs. Aderonke Imana.
Osinachi, who was renowned for her powerful gospel vocals, rose to prominence in 2017 with the hit song “Ekwueme” alongside Prospa Ochimana. Her death sparked an outpouring of grief and shock, especially as several colleagues and friends accused her husband of subjecting her to years of domestic abuse, which ultimately led to her tragic passing.
