MercyMe is an American contemporary Christian music band formed in 1994 in Edmond, Oklahoma. The band’s current lineup consists of lead vocalist Bart Millard, percussionist Robby Shaffer, bassist Nathan Cochran, and guitarists Michael John Scheuchzer and Barry Graul. Bart Millard, born on December 1, 1972, in Greenville, Texas, is the primary songwriter and has also released solo albums. The band members are American, and while Bart Millard is married (his life story, including his relationship with his father, was the subject of the movie “I Can Only Imagine”).
MercyMe’s music primarily spans the Contemporary Christian, Worship, and Christian Rock genres, though they have explored various styles including pop, R&B, and roots rock throughout their career. They initially released six independent albums before signing with INO Records in 2001. Over the years, they have also released music under Curb, Columbia, Epic, and Fair Trade Services. They are widely recognized for their impactful and accessible songwriting, and their ability to consistently produce chart-topping singles within the Christian music genre.
