Islamic Movement of Nigeria to Sue Police Over Arba’een Trek Killings
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has announced its intention to take legal action against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) following violent clashes that occurred during the Arba’een trek on August 25, 2024. The confrontation between IMN members, also known as Shi’ites, and the police led to the deaths of two officers and several civilians, with numerous injuries and property damage reported. In response, the IMN is seeking justice for the victims and calling for accountability from the police.
In a statement issued by Shaikh Rabi’u Abdullahi, the IMN accused the police of conducting a brutal attack on a private primary school and a guest house in Suleja, Niger State. The IMN claims that the police destroyed public and private properties, arrested innocent people, and denied detainees access to their families and legal representation. The group also reported that the police have refused to disclose the number of casualties and have allegedly taken away the deceased bodies, further complicating efforts to seek justice.
The IMN has previously faced similar challenges, as evidenced by a 2019 court ruling that deemed the arrest and killing of Ja’afar Muhammad by the police as a violation of his constitutional rights. Despite a court order for compensation, the police have yet to comply. The IMN’s current legal action includes a contempt of court charge against the IGP and a demand for the unconditional release of all those arrested during the recent violence. The IMN is urging authorities and the public to intervene and prevent further repression and violence against its members.
