FG Opens CNG Vehicle Conversion Centre in Ogun

NEW FACILITY AIMS TO PROMOTE THE USE OF COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS AS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL

Federal Government Launches CNG Conversion Incentive Programme in Ogun State

The Federal Government officially launched the Conversion Incentive Programme of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative on Friday in Abeokuta, Ogun State. This new initiative is designed to provide relief to Nigerians affected by the recent removal of fuel subsidies by offering free CNG conversions for one million vehicles.

Michael Oluwagbemi, CEO and Programme Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (Pi-CNG), outlined the program’s goals, emphasizing its focus on reducing fuel costs and promoting cleaner energy. “Our mission is to convert one million vehicles to run on CNG at no cost to the vehicle owners,” Oluwagbemi stated. He praised Ogun State for its leadership in adopting CNG as a sustainable transportation option.

The programme will collaborate with local conversion centres, with four centers already established in Ogun State. These centres will receive conversion kits funded by the Federal Ministry of Finance at no charge. Commercial drivers affiliated with organizations such as NURTW, NATO, and RTEAN will be selected for free vehicle conversions.

“This initiative, as promised by the President, addresses the current hardships faced by Nigerians. Today marks the beginning of fulfilling that promise here in Abeokuta,” Oluwagbemi said. He further explained that 50 drivers from each major transport union would be among the first to benefit from the program.

Jide Onakoya, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Energy, highlighted the program’s potential benefits for Ogun State. “This program will transform transportation in Ogun State by offering a cost-effective alternative to petrol and diesel. It will reduce pollution, enhance commercial activities, and strengthen the state’s economy,” Onakoya remarked.

Wale Adedotun, one of the conversion partners, spoke about the advantages of CNG over traditional fuels. He noted that gas is not only more cost-effective but also safer. “A kilogram of gas can cover 14-15 kilometres compared to 10 kilometres with a litre of petrol. Gas rises in case of a flame, making it safer, and it helps keep your engine in better condition,” Adedotun explained.

The CNG conversion programme marks a significant step toward sustainable transportation in Nigeria, promising both environmental and economic benefits for the country.
