Nigerians Respond to Minister’s Search for Woman Who Shared Mother’s Mental Health Video

PUBLIC REACTION INTENSIFIES AS THE MINISTER REQUESTS HELP LOCATING THE INDIVIDUAL WHO POSTED A VIDEO HIGHLIGHTING HER MOTHER'S MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES

Nigerians are reacting strongly to the Minister of Women Affairs, Kennedy-Ohanenye’s response to a viral video in which a woman filmed her mother’s mental health condition.

In her statement on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the minister condemned the video, accusing the daughter of exploiting her mother’s vulnerability for personal gain and social media attention. Kennedy-Ohanenye pledged a reward for information leading to the identification of both the woman and her mother, stressing the need for proper care and protection of the affected individual.

Her statement read in part: “We condemn the disturbing video report of a woman’s mental illness being exploited by her daughter for personal gain and social media content. This is unacceptable and troubling. Mental illness deserves compassion, understanding, and support – not exploitation.”

The minister further assured that necessary actions would be taken to hold the daughter accountable and urged everyone to respect the dignity of those facing mental health challenges.

However, many Nigerians are criticizing the minister’s response, accusing her of seeking attention rather than addressing the real issue. Some have reminded her of previous controversies, including her threats to sue the UN and other institutions.

User @emeka questioned the minister’s interpretation, stating, “I’m sorry, but how is she exploiting her? Yes, her mother is vulnerable, but that’s still her mom. She’s showing how she cares for her. Did you even listen to her story?”

Another user, @jojoh, argued, “How is this content exploitation? The lady is simply showing her mother’s state and her care for her. Perhaps she should have taken her to a psychiatrist, but does she have the means for that?”

Critics like @deleteluwo expressed frustration, saying, “You’ve been making threats and allegations for a year. Now you’re attacking someone who is clearly struggling to care for her mother. Minister of Goof.”

@uratuchi added, “Who is advising this minister? A young woman shows the world her mother’s plight and her care for her, and you call it exploitative? This is nothing but a clout-chasing move.”

Public sentiment remains divided as many Nigerians continue to express dissatisfaction with the minister’s stance.
