Edo State Launches Solar Power Projects to Enhance Economic Activities and Provide Reliable Electricity
The Edo State Government has unveiled a series of solar power projects aimed at boosting economic activities and providing reliable electricity to underserved and unserved households across the state. Dr. Ojiefoh Enaholo, the State Commissioner for Mining and Energy, highlighted these objectives during the commissioning of a 1-megawatt solar power grid in Ohovbe community, located in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
The commissioning ceremony was led by Edo State Deputy Governor, Engr. Marvellous Omobayo, who used the occasion to appeal for support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming governorship election scheduled for September 21.
Expanding Electricity Access
Dr. Enaholo detailed that the Ohovbe solar grid project would provide continuous 24-hour electricity to over 2,000 households. This initiative is part of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s broader commitment to ensuring stable and reliable electricity for residents. The solar grid is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for local communities by addressing the long-standing issues of erratic power supply and high estimated billing costs.
Enaholo also noted that similar solar power projects have been launched in Eyean community, with additional installations planned for the Military Hospital in Benin City and the Irrua Specialist Hospital, which will be commissioned shortly.
A Milestone in Power Sector Reform
The Commissioner outlined the historical context behind these developments, pointing out that Edo State had previously grappled with inconsistent power supply and exorbitant electricity charges. However, changes in legislation have paved the way for states to take more control over their power generation and distribution.
In 2022, Governor Obaseki utilized new legal provisions allowing states to generate and use power for their facilities. This led to the establishment of the Ossiomo power plant in Edo. The shift in legislation, initially facilitated by former President Muhammadu Buhari and continued under President Bola Tinubu, has enabled states to generate and sell electricity independently.
Enaholo emphasized that these initiatives are crucial for overcoming the historical challenges faced by Edo State’s power sector and for driving economic development through improved infrastructure and services.
By leveraging solar energy, the Edo State Government aims to create a more sustainable and reliable energy solution that supports economic growth and enhances the quality of life for its residents.
