Summary of her father Pelé’s career

The son of Fluminense footballer Dondinho and Celeste Arantes, Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born on October 23, 1940, in Três Coraçes, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Of two brothers and sisters, he was the older.

After the American inventor Thomas Edison, he was given that name. His parents chose to omit the ‘i’ and call him “Edson,” but due to a mistake on the birth certificate, his name appears in numerous documents as “Edison,” not “Edson,” as it should.

At initially, his family called him “Dico.” During his school years, he was given the nickname “Pelé” apparently due to his mispronunciation of the name of his favorite player, the local Vasco da Gama goalie Bilé.

The more he complained, the longer the nickname stuck. In his autobiography, Pelé admitted that neither he nor his former teammates knew what the moniker signified.

The phrase has no established Portuguese meaning, with the exception of the assertion that it is derived from Bilé and that it is the Hebrew word for “wonder”

In the state of So Paulo’s impoverished Bauru, Pelé was raised. He worked in tea shops as a servant to supplement his income. He learned how to play football from his father and played most of the time with a grapefruit or a sock filled with newspaper because he couldn’t buy a proper football.

He participated in several amateur teams while he was younger, including Sete de Setembro, Canto do Rio, So Paulinho, and Amériquinha. Waldemar de Brito’s junior team at the Bauru Athletic Club won two state youth championships under Pelé’s direction.

When he was in his mid-teens, he played indoor football for the Radium team.

Pelé began playing indoor football just as it was becoming popular in Bauru. He took part in the region’s first futsal (indoor football) competition. Pelé and his team won the inaugural title as well as a number of others.
