Russia and Ukraine Swap 230 Prisoners of War in UAE-Mediated Deal

UKRAINIAN PRISONERS OF WAR, DRAPED IN THEIR NATIONAL FLAGS, REACT FOLLOWING THEIR RELEASE.

On Saturday, Russia and Ukraine completed a significant prisoner exchange, each returning 115 captives. This development follows Kyiv’s surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region just over two weeks ago and aligns with Ukrainian Independence Day celebrations.

The swap reflects ongoing military tensions, with Kyiv advancing its offensive in Kursk and Russia focusing on other eastern Ukrainian towns. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) played a crucial role in mediating the exchange, highlighting their involvement in international diplomatic efforts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the return of Ukrainian soldiers, including members of the National Guard, Armed Forces, Navy, and State Border Guard Service. He shared images of the soldiers wrapped in Ukrainian flags, emphasizing the significance of their return to Ukraine.

Kyiv had previously reported capturing hundreds of Russian soldiers during the Kursk operation, which began on August 6. In turn, the Russian Defence Ministry confirmed that 115 Russian servicemen, taken prisoner in Kursk, had been returned from Ukrainian-held areas. The ministry noted that these soldiers are currently in Belarus for “psychological-medical help” before being transported back to Russia. Photos released by Russia showed the troops awaiting transportation near buses in a field.

The successful mediation by the UAE underscores the importance of international diplomacy in resolving conflicts and facilitating exchanges between opposing sides.
