Vusi Thembekwayo made headlines in December 2021 after his wife accused him of physically beating her. His assault case came a year after he wrote an open letter to South African men chastising them for harming women.

Vusi came home one evening, woke Palesa Thembekwayo up, and forced her to pack her belongings and leave their home, according to Palesa Thembekwayo’s court declaration. Vusi slapped her several times, dragged her by her legs out of their bed and down the stairs, then forced her and her belongings into a car and drove away. When the automobile came to a stop at a traffic signal, Palesa leaped out and raced away.

Vusi Thembekwayo denied all assault charges and was released on bond. Initially, he claimed that he was gone on business on the date of the incident, but then changed his story and admitted that he was at home but did not abuse his wife.
