FOMWAN Raises Alarm Over Hunger and Insecurity in Nigeria

THE ORGANIZATION CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION TO ADDRESS RISING FOOD SCARCITY AND SAFETY CONCERNS

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has expressed deep concerns over the escalating food insecurity in Nigeria, urging President Bola Tinubu to address the rising food prices and widespread insecurity. This appeal came after the conclusion of the association’s 39th Annual National Conference in Akure, Ondo State, where members discussed the pressing challenges facing the country. According to FOMWAN, the current situation reflects a deviation from Allah’s injunctions, with widespread corruption contributing to the nation’s difficulties.

The communiqué issued at the end of the conference highlighted the significant burden borne by women as the prices of staple foods continue to rise amidst growing insecurity. FOMWAN’s National President, Hajiya Ra’afiah Sanni, and the Public Relations Officer, Hajiya Maimuna Momodu, emphasized that these issues require urgent attention from the government and the community. The group pointed out that women are disproportionately affected by these challenges, which stem from systemic corruption and a departure from religious teachings. They stressed that adhering to Allah’s guidance could help mitigate these problems and bring about social stability.

FOMWAN also proposed several measures to combat these issues, including enhancing educational opportunities for women, both in Islamic and Western knowledge, and promoting skill acquisition to increase women’s employability and economic self-reliance. The organization called for increased political participation and education for women to access development opportunities and resources that could improve their economic standing. Additionally, FOMWAN urged greater collaboration with government institutions and non-governmental organizations to support women’s involvement in agriculture and other employment sectors. They advocated for creating safe spaces for women and girls, enforcing laws against criminal activities, and ensuring women’s effective participation in government initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation.
