Background

Jack Smith grew up in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, in New York city. He graduated at Liverpool High as a high school senior in 1987. Smith attended Harvard Law School and earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1994, after earning his Bachelor of Arts with best honors from the State University of New York at Oneonta.

Upon ending his education at the time, he secure a job at the office of the District Attorney for the County of New York as Assistant District Attorney where he was assigned to the Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence Units.

Much later into his career, Mr Smith started working in Brooklyn as an assistant U.S. attorney. It was there that Smith was placed in charge of prosecuting the NYPD policemen who had sodomized Abner Louima and obtaining the death punishment for Ronell Wilson for the murder of two police officers.

From 2008 through 2010, while he worked in the International Criminal Court’s Office of the Prosecutor, he handled cases related war crimes as part of his job. Soon later, due to his hardwork, the United States Department of Justice promoted him as the leader of the Public Integrity Section in 2010. (PIS).

In his 5 years at the helm of the PIS, he oversaw the prosecution of high-profile figures such as former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, former U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi, former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and former CIA leaker Jeffrey Sterling.

Then in 2015, Smith became an assistant U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. He was made the acting U.S. Attorney, in March of 2017, having previously filled the role formerly held by David Rivera. The nomination of Donald Q. Cochran prompted his resignation, which took effect in September 2017. Smith was named the vice president and head of litigation at Hospital Corporation of America in 2017.

On May 7, 2018, Smith started a four-year term as head prosecutor in The Hague’s Kosovo Specialist Chambers. Allegations of war crimes during the Kosovo War, particularly those involving Salih Mustafa, are being investigated by these chambers. He was first sworn in on September 11, 2018, and was reappointed on May 8, 2022, for a total of two terms.

On November 18, 2022, United States Attorney General Merrick Garland promoted Smith to the position of special counsel. The criminal investigations into Trump’s involvement with the January 6 assault on the United States Capitol and Trump’s handling and storage of secret information at his Mar-a-Lago residence have been assigned to Smith to handle. Mr. Smith is overseeing a number of investigative strands.

Mr. Smith and his team are securing interviews opportunities with some persons who worked in the Trump White House and may have familiarity with either how he consumed classified information, or how he dealt with paper that he routinely carted with him in cardboard boxes, during much of the span of his presidency.

Personal life

Smith is a competitive triathlete despite not becoming a swimmer until he was in his mid-thirties. In July 2011, he married Katy Chevigny, a documentary filmmaker known for Becoming, an award-winning 2020 documentary of Michelle Obama. They have a daughter. The couple has been living in the Netherlands since 2018.
